In this post, we’re comparing two of the top-rated budget espresso makers by DeLonghi, the EC702 vs. the ECO310W espresso makers. Why these two? Because both are at similar range of price and they seemingly look or have the same features, which might confuse a lot of buyers. So what we’ll do is highlight the differences between the two machines to help you make a better informed decision.

DeLonghi EC702 vs. ECO310W: What Is The Difference?

[apc id=”8″]

First of all, let us highlight the similarities between them:

  • 15-bar pressure pump espresso makers.
  • Patented milk frother/steam wand.
  • Include dual filters for use with ground coffee or espresso pods (E.S.E pods).
  • Self priming operation that eliminates start up wait time.
  • Cup warming tray.
  • 1100Watts input power

The Difference Between These Espresso Makers:

  • The ICONA ECO310W has a vintage Italian look while the EC702 has more of a sleek look.
  • The ECO310W has a slightly larger water tank capacity at 48oz (1.4L) while the EC702 has 44oz (1.3L) capacity.
  • Design wise, the ECO310W has a metal exterior available in three colors: beige, black and red. The EC702 combined plastic and metal, available in stainless steel color only.

Which Espresso Maker Should I Buy?

As far as I can see, the difference between these two machines is hardly mentionable, there’s at the same price range as well. So your choice would come to which machine would look better in your kitchen and which design you prefer. The metal exterior on the ICONA ECO310W is great for aesthetics as well as durability. Other than that, you’re buying the same features.

The Saeco Poemia and Aroma espresso machines are two excellent budget machines for the beginner at home barista. Both look somewhat similar yet they’re differently priced, why is that? And which of them is better?

Let’s have a look at the comparison chart:

[apc id=”7″]

What Is The Difference Between The Saeco Poemia and Aroma?

If that table is a bit confusing to you, let’s break the difference down:

  • Design: the Poemia is plastic made, while the Aroma is in stainless steel housing which is more durable.
  • Features: The Aroma features a knob that allows you to control the intensity of the Espresso from mild to strong. The Poemia does not have this feature.
  • Water tank: the Aroma has an 80 oz water tank vs. a 34 oz water tank for the Poemia.

Similarities:

  • Both have a frothing wand that doubles as a hot water dispenser.
  • Both are compatible with ground coffee or E.S.E pods.
  • Both have the same pressurized filter and 15-bar pump pressure.

Which Is Best, the Saeco Aroma or Poemia and Why?

The Aroma machine wins for three reasons:

  • Its stainless steel housing that makes it more durable and easy to clean.
  • Its large water tank.
  • For the ability to tweak the flavor and intensity of your espresso shots

The Aroma is more expensive than the Poemia, so if it’s within your budget to buy a machine for a little under $300, the Aroma should definitely be your choice.

Saeco Aroma vs. Via Venezia, What’s The Difference?

Now we’ve established that the Saeco Aroma is better than the Poemia, we’ll compare it to another machine also by Saeco called the Via Venezia:

Philips Saeco Via Venezia Espresso Machine

  • Both the Aroma and Via Venezia are at around the same price range, with a little extra for the Via Venezia.
  • When it comes to operation, the Via Venezia uses button controls as well as a steam dial, just like the Aroma, only located differently. They look quite similar, too.
  • The water reservoir capacity on the Aroma is 85 oz, and the machine has a clear front window that shows you the level of the water. As for the Via Venezia, the capacity is 68 oz with no front-window.

Apart from the slight design difference and the water reservoir capacity, we can’t see any differences in the actual operation of the two machines. The Via Venezia is also available in both black and steel design, much like the Aroma.

You’ve probably already heard of many types of espresso machines: automatic, super automatic, steam and pump espresso machines. All machines work to produce espresso and excellent coffee drinks, however how they work is a bit different, and of course, that will reflect on the machine’s price. Pump espresso machines are among the most affordable espresso machines for home.

How Does a Pump Espresso Machine Work?

From its name, you can tell that the machine relies on a pump to do its work. Basically, when you press the button on the machine for it to start extracting espresso, the pump inside the machine starts drawing water from the water tank, which holds room-temp water, and it pumps it into the boiler of the machine. After the water is heated inside the boiler, it then runs through the porta-filter – which holds coffee ground – and the espresso extraction starts.

Pump espresso machines run for anywhere from $50 and up to $300+. If you’re looking for a durable and well-built pump espresso machine, then you should expect to pay $100 to $190. Here are our recommendations for the top rated pump espresso machines for under $200*:

Any downside to this espresso machine?
The downside is not machine related exactly. Some customers believe the capsules to be a bit pricey (yet, still cheaper than your regular chain lattes). But for an Espresso machine of its features and at an affordable price, and most importantly the convenience it offers, the price of the capsules will be a very small price to pay. And there are solutions to the capsules costs, read on to see how you can save on the cost of Nespresso capsules.

Note that for you to be able to create coffee drinks like cappuccino or latte, you need to bundle this machine with a milk frother. You can choose Nespresso’s Aeroccino frother, or select any other frother. The choice is yours. You can check out our recommended electric milk frothers here. You can also have a look at the best Nespresso bundles available here.

We’ve also done a quick comparison between Nespresso CitiZ and Pixie  which should help you decide which Nespresso model is best for you.

How To Save on Nespresso Capsules:

If you find the ongoing cost of buying capsules from Nespresso to be expensive, then here are a few tips to help you save up:

Using a refillable capsules is a bit of a work, but it saves up on the cost of capsules for sure. With a refillable capsule, all you  have to do is fill it up with your favorite coffee ground and use it just as you would use a Nespresso capsule. You’ll have to wash the capsule for next use.

If you’re not so keen on the work that a refillable capsule requires, your second option is to use an alternative capsule brand. When Nespresso first came out, they had a patent on their OriginalLine capsule design, but lost this patent eventually. This lead to a lot of alternative brands coming out with compatible capsules for Nespresso (Original Line only – such as CitiZ and Pixie). The best part about these brands is that they’re often very competitive in price and are a lot cheaper than Nespresso’s official capsule. Here are some suggestions:

Gourmesso Nespresso Compatible Capsules:

Gourmesso capsules are up to 35% cheaper than Nespresso’s capsules. They’re available in a wide variety of roasts and flavors. They’re also have organic selection, fairtrade coffee, as well as tea capsules. Check out their entire selection here.

Breville ESP8XL Cafe Roma Stainless Espresso Maker

The Breville Cafe Aroma Stainless Steel espresso machine is a single thermoblock pump machine that you can get for under $300. A somewhat similar to the DeLonghi EC702 15-Bar Pump machine but with more upgraded features and a better built housing that makes it more durable.

Features of the Breville ESP8XL Cafe Aroma:

  • Stainless steel housing, easy to clean and maintain and more durable.
  • 15 bar pressure.
  • Large 1-2/7-quart water tank with indicator.
  • Removable drip tray and grid.
  • Steam wand for milk heating and frothing.
  • Included with the machine: 2 stainless steel espresso cups and a milk frothing pitcher.

The Breville Cafe Aroma is one of those machines that were created with the power of a commercial espresso machine but with the home user in mind (kind of like the Gaggia Classic and Rancilio Silvia 3 ). The stainless steel housing gives it a tough exterior and a sleek and classic design. Yet, it’s easy to operate using the dial on the front. The dual portafilter features different baskets that you can use to extract a single or a double shot of espresso, you can also use a special filter for the convenient pre-measured E.S.E espresso pods.

Using the steam wand should be quite an easy task – it will require some getting used to if this is your first time using it. You don’t need to buy a pitcher as one will be included with your purchase. In no time, you’ll be able to steam and froth milk for delicious coffee drinks like cappuccino, latte, macchiato… etc. And you’ll really love the included set of espresso cups, very European inspired stainless steel cups that will give you a great in-home Cafe experience.

Breville Cafe Roma ESP8XL vs. DeLonghi EC702:

Like we said at the start of this post, the Cafe Roma is quite the competitor to the DeLonghi EC702 as entry-level espresso makers. So, which of them do you pick?

[apc id=”10″]

Operation:

The Breville Cafe Roma and DeLonghi EC702 are both manual espresso machines. They pretty much operate the same way.

Capacity:

The Breville Cafe Roma has 40 oz water reservoir capacity while the DeLonghi has 44 oz.

Design and Material:

Cafe Roma is smaller in size (9 x9 x12 inches) than the DeLonghi (11.25″ x 8.19″ x 12.5). Both espresso makers combine stainless steel with hard plastic for their exterior, but the EC702 has more plastic.

The Cafe Roma has rotary knobs for control while the DeLonghi uses push buttons.

What’s In The Box:

Cafe Roma: single/double shot filters, tamper, measuring scoop, frothing pitcher.

DeLonghi EC702: single/double shot filters, tamper, measuring scoop. You’ll have to purchase the pitcher separately.

Which Do You Choose?

As  you can see, there’s hardly any special difference between the two espresso makers. In such case, I’d like to recommend you compare prices at the time you’re going to purchase and pick the best deal for your budget.

Breville Cafe Roma vs. Breville Duo Temp Pro:

The Breville Duo Temp Pro is quite a step-up from the Cafe Roma. Although it’s also a manual espresso machine, it has more features and a better heating system.

  • It has a bloom function which gradually increases water pressure over the coffee ground to expand the beans before extraction.
  • A purge function automatically adjusts water temperatures after steaming milk for the best espresso extraction temperature.
  • It has a full brushed stainless steel body.
  • Water capacity is 61 oz.
  • Hot water on demand
  • Included accessories: razoer dose trimming tool, single/dual filter basket, milk frothing just, water filter holder and a water filter.
  • Dimensions: 11″ x 10″ x 13″

So it’s a larger machine, still manual, but has more power to produce a better shot of espresso and better milk texture.

Click here to learn more about Breville Duo Temp Pro, read the customer reviews and buy it.

Breville Cafe Roma vs. DeLonghi Dedica:

  • Unlike the Cafe Roma, the Dedica is an automatic espresso maker. It’s a great option for beginners as well and just as easy to use.
  • DeLonghi Dedica is made of better quality than the Cafe Roma. Its exterior is fully stainless steel.
  • It’s rather small in size (6-inch wide), that’s one of its biggest selling points, actually. If you don’t have enough countertop space, this will be rather useful to you.
  • The buttons on the Dedica are already pre-set with automatic flow stop for espresso and lungo sizes. But you can override these sizes and set your own and the machine will save them for later use.

The DeLonghi Dedica is one of the best options for any entry level espresso maker that’s also very compact in size.

Philips Saeco Via Venezia Espresso Machine

The Saeco Via Venezia Espresso Machine is a manual espresso machine that makes a good entry-level machine for someone who is just starting to brew their espresso at home. Small in size, good features and does not require a lot work. This machine should be a quick-learn and perfect for a beginner.

Features of the Saeco Via Venezia Espresso Machine:

  • Light controls that show you when the machine is ready to extract and when it’s ready to steam.
  • Patented portafilter that ensures the best espresso extraction.
  • Compatible with ground coffee or E.S.E pods.
  • Steam wand for milk heating and frorthing. The wand is also used as a hot water dispenser.
  • 68 oz removable water tank.
  • Cup warming tray with 6 cups capacity.

Buy it From Amazon

Like previously mentioned, this is an entry-level espresso machine, so you can’t expect mind blowing features. However, it does exactly what it is supposed to do. You’ll be able to extract espresso – single or double shots – and you’ll be able to froth milk for delicious coffee drinks. The espresso brews with a touch of a button after you’ve added the ground coffee to the filter. After the espresso is brewed, the light indicator should show you when the machine is ready to steam, and that’s when you’ll be able to start frothing the milk for cappuccinos or lattes. If you’re not using the wand for milk frothing, you can use it to dispense hot water from the machine for tea or other hot beverages.

Saeco Via Venezia Espresso Machine_

What I’m not crazy about when it comes to theSaeco Via Venezia is that it’s built from plastic parts, which makes it less durable than some other machines. However, the same machine is available in a die-cast metal housing, which I HIGHLY recommend for a longer machine life-time. Other than that, you should exactly get what you’d expect from an entry-level machine.

There are other machines I would recommend over the Saeco Via Venezia Espresso Machine, even though they are in the same price range, they still perform better and are built better and are certainly more durable:

Gaggia Baby Class

Gaggia for Illy Espresso Machine

Gaggia has always been a trusted brand in the world of Espresso machines. One of the best pump machines we featured on this site (and a best seller as well!) is the Gaggia 14101 Pump machine. But for someone who is looking for a more quick and convenient way to prepare espresso at home, a single-serve capsule machine is the perfect choice, and this Gaggia for illy machine combines two coffee giants: Gaggia and illy Coffee, one of the best Italian coffee brand in the world.

This Gaggia machine was created to work with illy’s iperEspresso capsules. A simple to use and very convenient, it gives you Italian style, aromatic espresso with thick crema from a single touch of a button.

  • Integrated container holds up to 12 used capsules before need to dispose.
  • Mavea Water Filter – Uses a four-stage filtration process to purify tap water and reduce scale and mineral buildup.
  • Hot water dispenser for making other hot beverages.

The machine is super easy to use, simply insert the capsule and press a button and the machine will brew your coffee in seconds. No fuss, no mess. When you want to create milk based coffee drinks like cappuccino or latte, you can use the steam wand to heat and froth the milk. You will easily create cafe-style coffee in no time.

The illy iperEspresso capsules are available in two strength; Medium and Dark roast. Decaf and Lungo (for higher coffee volume) as well as other South American and Ethiopian blends available. If you’ve tried illy Coffee before, you know you’ll be getting the best coffee quality there is.

The Gaggia illy Plus is in the same line as the Nespresso single-serve machine. The advantage a Nespresso machine gets over the Gaggia illy Plus is that Nespresso offers a wider variety of capsule blends. But if you’re already an illy coffee fan, then you know exactly what to expect from these capsules – the highest quality Italian coffee.

Nespresso U Machines

When it comes to the Nespresso U machine (see our post about it here), we noticed this question comes up rather a lot: What is the different between Nespresso U D50 and C50? Short answer: there’s only slight difference design wise, but both machines are identical in their features and how they work.

After spending a lot of time researching this, here’s what we found…

What both Nespresso U D50 and C50 have in common:

  • Fully automatic, with automatic capsule piercing and ejection.
  • 27 oz water tank that rotates 180-degrees, so you can place it on the back or either side of the machine.
  • Automatic memorization of preferred cup size volume. Three cup sizes available: Espresso, Lungo and Ristretto.
  • Removable magnetic drip tray to accommodate different cup sizes.
  • Light indicator for empty water tank and for full capsule drawer, which holds up to 12 used capsules.

So, what sets the two machines apart? Well, two things:

  • If you look closely at the picture above, you’ll notice that the dispensing head on the C50 is different that the one on the D50. This does not make them work differently, however. They still perform the same.
  • Available colors: The C50 is available in Pure Cream and in Pure Gray. The D50 is available in Pure Black and Pure Orange.

That’s it!

So if you’re not quite specific about color and the slight design difference, either the Nespresso U C50 or Nespresso U D50 would be great for you!

Popular Questions About the Nespresso U:

What Is Nespresso UMILK, How Is It Different than Nespresso U?

Nespresso UMILK is exactly the same as the Nespresso U Machine but it features an integrated milk frother instead of a separate one. Why go for an integrated milk frother? It operates using the same plug as the machine, so it saves the need for an extra outlet.

What Is The Difference Between Nespresso U, CitiZ and Pixie?

Please refer to this post for a detailed comparison: https://doseofcaffeine.com/nespresso-u-machine-difference-between-nespresso-u-vs-pixie-vs-citiz/

Can I Use My Own Coffee Blend/Ground with a Nespresso U?

All Nespresso machines are compatible with Nespresso coffee capsules only. However, there are some unofficial refillable Nespresso capsules that are not highly recommended. Some examples: Capsul’in Nespresso Compatible Capsules which can be used only once, as in disposable, or the Coffee Duck refillable Nespresso compatible capsules.  I don’t recommend these for many reasons:

  • They could break inside your machine, causing damage to the needle and might break your machine all together.
  • You won’t get the same taste as a Nespresso capsules, which are carefully chosen and measured to brew a perfect cup of espresso. You can get very technical and do the right measuring yourself, but will take the luxury and convenience out of your Nespresso experience.

Does The Nespresso U Come With a Sample Pack?

Yes, it includes a capsules sample pack which has one capsule of each available coffee flavor/roast.

Does The Nespresso U Make Lattes and Cappuccinos?

Yes, of course! You’ll have to get a bundle that has the Aeroccino milk frother though, or get any electric milk frother you prefer.

Here’s a video on how you can make a latte with a Nespresso machine:

The ever increasing popularity of cappuccinos and variety of coffee drinks such as espresso shots, lattes, etc. has been a propelling factor for several businesses as well as individuals to own an espresso machine. Owning an espresso machine can be much cheaper than buying a cappuccino everyday from the coffee shops like we’ve covered in a recent post. We’ve also mentioned that Nespresso is the most popular espresso machine for home, so we’ve decided to compare two of Nespresso’s most popular models: The Pixie C60 and CitiZ C120.

Let’s have a look at these models:

Nespresso Citiz Espresso Maker with Aeroccino Milk Frother:

Nespresso Citiz Espresso Maker is perfect for people who love espresso as well as gourmet coffee drinks such as cappuccino and latte. This trendy cappuccino maker prepares several yummy coffee recipes such as cappuccinos, macchiatos, lattes, lungo and much more, with just one push of the button. One of the best advantages of this machine is an easy insertion and ejection of capsules. It comes with several outstanding features such as Compact Brewing Unit Technology and Thermoblock Heating Element that makes it a wonder machine.

Citiz features a removable 34-ounce water tank (bigger than the Pixie’s) and a 19 Bar High Pressure Pump. This machine is fully automatic and its programmable coffee volume quantity makes your life much easier. It also consists of a folding dip tray to accommodate tall recipe glasses. It has a fast preheating time of 60 seconds. This machine also features an Aeroccino milk frother with ability to froth cold or hot milk.

Both these espresso machines have their own advantages and they also have certain differences. For instance:

  • Unlike Nespresso Citiz , Nespresso Pixie Espresso Maker does not include a milk frother. However, the frother can be purchased separately.
  • Nespresso Citiz also has a larger water tank compared to that of Nespresso Pixie.
  • Nespresso Citiz  Espresso Maker offers you with wider options as  you can use it for making espresso as well as gourmet coffee drinks such as cappuccino and latte where as Nespresso Pixie  allows you to make espresso and coffee drinks like Americano and Lungo.
  • For anyone who’s concerned: the Nespresso Pixie is made in Switzerland while the CitiZ is made in China.
Bottom line:
– Depending on the amount of coffee that you’ll be making, the water tank size will make the difference. So if you want to save the water tank refilling trip, you’ll want the CitiZ .

Capsule Compatibility:

Citiz and Pixie are both Nespresso OriginalLine machines. This means that they’re compatible with OriginalLine capsules from Nespresso, refillable capsules from third party brands as well as Nespresso-compatible capsules.
This gives you the option of trying a lot of coffee varieties, sometimes at less of the cost of Nespresso’s official capsules. Using a reusable capsule allows you to use your favorite coffee ground while saving on capsule costs.

Nespresso by Breville vs. Nespresso by DeLonghi, Is There a Difference?

Upon buying your Nespresso machine, you might find that some are sold under the brand name Breville and others are sold under DeLonghi. Both are well known brands in the world of home appliance, but why are Nespresso machines sold under their names and is there a difference between either brand when it comes to Nespresso machines?

In their core and function, the machines are identical. Nespresso seems to have partnered with DeLonghi and Breville to help with manufacturing and supplying the machines. The only difference you might find is that one brand can offer a different color than the other, that’s as big of a difference it could get. Otherwise, all Nespresso machines under any brand name are identical in how they work.

Which One Of These Espresso Machines Should You Buy?

The DeLonghi EC702 vs. Cuisinart EM-100:

  • Essentially, both are the same, except for very few difference:
  • The Cuisinart has larger water tank (53 oz vs 44 oz)
  • The Cuisinart includes many accessories: coffee scoop, tamper and frothing jug. The DeLonghi does not.
  • The DeLonghi is slightly more powerful at 1100 Watts vs. 1000 watts for the Cuisinart.

DeLonghi Dedica or DeLonghi EC702?

DeLonghi Dedica is a better choice for:

  • Its more modern looks, sleek design and polished stainless steel housing.
  • The narrow width of the machine makes it a great choice for many people who don’t have a lot of kitchen space. Also makes it great for small office use or dorm use.

On the other hand, the EC702 has:

  • Quicker boiler which allows you to brew one shot after another with nearly no wait time.
  • It has a larger water reservoir.
  • But on the downside, it’s built of plastic housing.
